Lettering Workshops for August!

The summer has FLOWN by! I’m actually dying a little bit inside because of how quickly “Summer Swim Days” with our grandkids have come and gone. And, honestly, sending kids back to school in the Arizona July heat really seems inhumane. The good news is, we can get started on those Fall Lettering Workshops!

I’ll be offering some day time and mid-week workshops, as well as continuing on Saturday. Rather than having an “Intermediate” class, we’ll go with skills-building Lettering Workshops. These will vary from month to month and each workshop will focus on two or three specific lettering skills. The Basics of Hand Lettering class will remain as long as there is interest. Anytime you would like a little refresher, feel free to repeat a course. You may have the basic ideas down, but we would have some time to focus on any additional questions you may have, as well as practice, practice, practice! I’ve also added Chalk Lettering to the menu. Super excited about this! Each participant will get their own chalkboard and tools to take home. We’ll add more chalk art skills down the road, as well.

It has been suggested that I set up a time each month that is just “Open Workshop” for friends to come practice together or to ask for a bit more help. If there is enough interest, I’ll add that later in the fall. I’m also open to presenting on-site Girls’ Night-type workshops where we practice a few basic skills and have a make-and-take project. The possibilities and fun with hand lettering are endless!

All August workshops will be the Summer Special price of $35 and will include all needed supplies in a kit for you to take home. I will announce the fall schedule soon. Space is limited in all workshops, so as soon as you decide which classes you want to play in, message or email me. I’ll reserve your seat and let you in on all the other pertinent details.

Basics of Hand Lettering, 10:00 am

Learn the basics of hand lettering in a fun, judgment-free environment. We’ll talk about: historical and modern lettering and what that means for you in finding your own style, acquiring and caring for basic supplies, the anatomy of letters, and we’ll learn basic hand lettering rules – so you can break them! No need to have good handwriting to take this class (promise!). You will be provided with a calligraphy tool kit that includes an oblique holder (yes, you’ll know what that is by the time class is over), a calligraphy nib, two colors of ink, practice paper, and more. And it’s all yours to keep!

Basics of Chalk Lettering, 1:30 pm

Learn the Basics of Chalk Lettering including: what supplies you need and where to find them, how to season and care for chalkboards, basic lettering anatomy and styles, and the basic principles and process of designing a layout. You will receive a fun kit of supplies to take home including a small chalkboard, chalk, eraser, and more.

Lettering Workshop: Playing with Letter Forms and Layouts, 10:00 am

Time to build on those Basics! Bring your Oblique Holder and Dinky Dips, with or without ink in them, that you received from the Basics of Hand Lettering class. I will refill your black, if needed, and we’ll add two more inks to your collection. You’ll also receive a new calligraphy nib, as well as other papers and tools you need to build your skills. We’ll work on building more creativity into your lettering, and start designing layouts. Basics of Hand Lettering, or some experience, is highly recommended.
